Back by popular demand! Chicago’s premiere gypsy-jazz band Swing Gitan led by Alfonso Ponticelli returns to the Museum for an evening of foot-tappin’ swing played on acoustic instruments in the 1930’s-style music of guitarist Django Reinhardt. It’s a blend of the jubilant swing of early jazz with the feisty passion of gypsy music, with a strong dose of guitar pyrotechnics and virtuosic improvisation.

Admission includes two complimentary wine, beer or non-alcoholic drink tickets. Guests must be 21 years of age.

Ticket includes Museum general admission. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for guests wishing to visit the museum.

About Gypsy Jazz

Alfonso Ponticelli and Swing Gitan—featuring a world-class lineup of musicians on violin, rhythm guitar and upright bass—celebrates jazz guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt’s signature sound. Formed in 2001, Swing Gitan continues Reinhardt’s pioneering style from the 1930s, blending the swing rhythms of early jazz with the dark passion of gypsy music.

This program is presented in partnership with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra.

The Chicago Jazz Orchestra (CJO) was founded in 1978 as the Jazz Members Big Band by Jeff Lindberg and the late Steve Jensen. Composed of Chicago’s top musicians, the CJO is Chicago’s oldest professional jazz orchestra in continuous operation and one of the oldest jazz orchestras in the country. Like the mansion and the collection that is housed in the Driehaus Museum, the Chicago Jazz Orchestra has a long, impressive, and artistic history.

Media support is provided by WDCB Jazz & Blues.
