The Drawing Room Present 5

The piano at the east wall is not original to the house, but stands in the same location as the original Nickerson piano. The present piano was designed by the firm Chickering & Sons, one of the leading piano manufacturers of 19th-century America. The satinwood case features oil-painted floral decorations, while the legs are of Macassar ebony. The text within the painted trompe l’oeil ribbon on the lid of the piano is from Milton’s “L’Allegro.” It reads, “And ever against eating cares / Lap me in soft Lydian airs / Married to immortal verse.”
